Dance Oasis Studios is very pleased to welcome Ms Codi Dalen to our dance family!

Ms Codi will be teaching our Preschool and 5/6 Ballet classes, beginning this coming Thursday, November 12. Ms Chrissie will be her teaching assistant. Ms Codi will also be a substitute teacher for other programs when necessary.

Ms. Dalen has an extensive background in Classical Ballet as well as Jazz, Tap, Modern, HipHop and Flamenco. She has been a certified teacher with England’s Royal Academy of Dance since 2008 and regularly enters students into exams with great success. Ms. Dalen, combining her business education with her love of teaching, opened Soul Funktion Dance Studio in 2003 within the resort community of Whistler, British Columbia. The dance studio runs with enthusiastic community support for all that the children are learning and achieving. She has choreographed award-winning dances in a variety of styles for competitions and performances. Her many accolades extend to a wide array of genres, including Jazz, Tap, Acro, Musical Theatre and Lyrical Jazz. Ms. Dalen’s experiences as the Founder and Artistic Director of Soul Funktion Dance Studio and also conscientious of the need to continuously upgrade her skills and embrace a full knowledge of various teaching methods led her to realize that a large proportion of her students were looking for something to deepen their practice of dance and connection with themselves. In her search to help her students connect to that confident but innocently pure centre of expression within themselves, she was guided to the beginnings of the Bartenieff/Laban principles. While delving into study Ms. Dalen experienced an in road into realizing her true nature and freedom of expression in movement. The BF/Laban material offered a guide through the physical deeply into the connections with the mind and spirit. She’s had the opportunity to study BF/Laban material with Bill Evans, Brockport State University, NY; and Peggy Hackney and Janice Meadon, University of California, Berkeley, CA. Ms. Dalen continues to realize her love of teaching dance in the rural community and studio setting. Her movement classes are thriving as she weaves her knowledge of the Bartenieff/Laban principles into her children’s and youth programs.

“I have danced my whole life, experiencing the positive and sometimes not so positive aspects of studying dance. I desire to work within a school that develops dancers with skill and technique and also nurtures the creative possibilities within each individual. I desire to teach people, not just dance steps. I desire to connect with colleagues that appreciate the mastery of movement with a balance of expressive unique artistry. An environment that makes teaching and learning a joyful and meaningful experience for teachers and students.

Over the years my approach to teaching has steadily shifted from outcome based feedback to a place of encouraging and guiding the senses to feel the structure and function of expressive moving. In approaching movement this way I have observed that the students and I are assisting each other to find ways back to ourselves, enabling us to take our soul’s expression on to the stage and out into life. I believe children come from a place of knowing spirit and come from a place of joy. My dream is to foster each individual desire to keep these qualities open and strong in their dance and their lives.”
